The Selma
I met Selma Schimmel as her makeup artist at a cancer conference. My friend who recommended me for the job let me know that she was a very sweet woman, but very particular. I was nervous. Upon meeting Selma, she made me feel welcome and my fears disappeared- especially once I found out she liked to do her own eyeliner. I have been a makeup artist for over a decade and it still amazes me how quickly a bond can form between artist and client, although part of that was Selma's gift. She made the people she came in contact with feel special and valued. In those early morning hours we talked about so much- fears, dreams, goals, cancer... I admired and was inspired by her courage and dedication to helping people with cancer.
I was thrilled when I was able to work with Selma again. We picked up where we left off the year before and enjoyed experimenting with new beauty techniques. The cancer had returned and she knew it was her last trip to Chicago. I was heartbroken. I wore The Selma's (before they were The Selma's) one morning and she told me how much she liked them and how she saw a V and O for Vital Options. That night I decided they would be called The Selma's in honor of the amazing woman I had the gift of working with. I gave her a pair the following morning and asked if I could call them The Selma (it took about an hour to decide between silver or gold, she took gold- I wish I had made her both) and we both cried. A lot. Which made getting ready for the last panel a challenge. For every pair sold I will donate a portion of the sale to Vital Options, an amazing organization dedicated to
I think of Selma regularly, but especially every time I wash my hands and dry them on my pants (it happens a lot). I think of her scolding me and telling me I had better teach my children how to dry their hands on a towel. Jackson, my son, reaches for the towel every time and I think Selma would be proud.
